Businesses Boost the Bottom Line with Mitel
Report verifies that Mitel Unified Communications Solutions are amongst the most energy efficient in the industry
OTTAWA, Ontario – December 11, 2008 – After evaluating the energy required to run Mitel® Unified Communications Solutions for businesses of various sizes, independent testing firm, The Tolly Group, has found that the power consumption of Mitel solutions is amongst the lowest in the industry.
“In the current economic environment, all areas of a business are looking to reduce operating costs and eliminate unnecessary expenses,” said Kevin Tolly, founder, president, and CEO of The Tolly Group. “This applies in the data center where CIOs and managers are looking for energy savings all across their IT infrastructure. The low power consumption of Mitel’s Unified Communications Solutions translates back into a lower cost of ownership for businesses.”
The testing was commissioned by Mitel and conducted in October 2008 to examine the Mitel 3300 IP Communications Platform (ICP) and a selection of Mitel IP phones.
Based on three typical business implementations, The Tolly Group test results demonstrated that the Mitel Unified Communications Solutions require as little as 3,885 watts to support IP controllers and phones across a large 1,500-user network; 1,237 watts for a multi-site medium 350-employee network; and just 181 watts to support a small 65-user office.
These numbers equate into large savings for the customer. For example, compared to similar tests of competitors’ solutions conducted by The Tolly Group, Mitel Unified Communications Solutions consume up to 62 percent less power.
Additionally, when comparing mid-range phone sets, Mitel only consumes 2.4 watts versus similarly featured competitor's phones typically ranging from 3.1 to 6.0 watts or higher. These power savings directly impact the bottom line as phones are generally responsible for two-thirds of the power consumption for standard telephony systems.
“Mitel factors both power consumption and environmental sustainability into the functional design of its products,” said Jim Davies, chief technology officer, Mitel. “Not only do our solutions help customers decrease their environmental impact but the cost savings they receive from reduced power consumption goes directly to the bottom line.”
As mentioned in the report the impact of reduced power consumption across the data and communication infrastructure also includes lower costs for cooling and higher phone density per POE (Power over Ethernet) Layer 2 switch.
“Mitel's low power result is impressive in comparison to others. The significance of power savings is huge in today’s economic environment,” said Allan Sulkin, president, TEQConsult Group. “More frequently we are seeing customers question energy efficiency and the desire to optimize power.”

How Employers Can Reward Without Increasing Salaries

Survey shows that unified communications may hold the solution

PHOENIX, Arizona – October 29, 2008 -- Fifty-nine percent of American teleworkers report saving at least $25 per month on fuel costs, and a quarter of those save more than $100, according to a new survey sponsored by Mitel, a leading provider of unified communications solutions.

“High fuel costs are leading many companies to create teleworking programs that put more money in employees’ pockets without increasing their salaries,” said Doug Michaelides, vice president global marketing at Mitel, sponsor of the U.S. Unified Communications Trends Survey. “We believe this has been a big driver of the recent acceleration of customer interest in our unified communications solutions as employers seek to retain employees while holding the line on salary increases.” That pressure is demonstrated throughout the economy, according to human resources consultant Hewitt Associates, which just released a study that reveals virtually flat base pay raises across the U.S. ( www.hewitt.com).

The Mitel U.S. Unified Communications Trends Survey reveals that a surprising number of employees are inclined to join or remain with an employer that offers teleworking.

* 91 percent of respondents feel that teleworking is a “good” or “great” idea
* 22 percent of teleworkers said they would re-evaluate their job if their employer did not have a teleworking program
* 42 percent of survey respondents believe companies seeking to recruit talent should offer a teleworking program

Such sentiments have a direct impact on company’s financial performance. The Society for Human Resource Management reports that the average cost of replacing an employee – including advertising, relocation, travel, agency fees, and benefits – now exceeds $7,000. Moreover, 64 percent of teleworkers in the Mitel survey report they are more productive and generate higher quality work when working from a location other than the office.

“When you factor in productivity and the role of teleworking in recruitment and retention, it’s pretty easy to make a return-on-investment case,” said Michaelides. “Our unified communications solutions deliver the functionality of an in-office setting for off-site employees. As teleworking becomes standard corporate practice, it’s becoming a competitive tool to retain the best workforce.” According to a recent survey by WorldatWork, the percentage of American companies that offer teleworking jumped from 30 to 42 percent during the last 12 months. Rising gas prices, leading-edge technology, and the push for work-life flexibility were cited as the catalysts ( www.worldatwork.org).

Mitel’s customers have been among the early adopters of unified communications technology, and have benefited from the strong ROI of teleworkers, both in terms of financial impact and employee satisfaction. “Teleworking allowed us to change our business model by scaling back on the number of nationwide service centers to reduce overhead costs, without losing our knowledge workers. They are our keys to success,” said Lauren Johansson, manager of IP telephony services at MedQuist, a leading provider of medical transcription software technology and services. “By placing them into a virtual workforce, we reduce costs, retain the employee, and allow them to work in their own environment with all the right tools necessary to perform their job.”

The U.S. Unified Communications Survey, sponsored by Mitel, was conducted online by Zoomerang Market Research in August 2008 among 812 American white collar workers. Results for the entire survey are at http://www.mitel.com/resources/234_2636-Unified_Gen_Results-US-FINAL.pdf.
